Biosphere open house to include plans to build in park

Parksville will waive the rental fee for an upcoming open house hosted by the Mt. Arrowsmith biosphere centre steering committee.
The event, tentatively scheduled for No. 22, is sure to attract attention in light of the controversy surrounding a proposal to site an interpretive facility in Rathtrevor Provincial Park.
"It needs to be a big enough room to accommodate the amount of feedback it's been generating,"said councillor Teresa Patterson, the city liaison to the biosphere committee, of her motion to have the cost of rental at the communty centre paid for from council contingency funds.
"I felt this definitely has a lot of community involvement and is an issue that needs to be put forward to the public,"said Patterson. "The committee is on a very tight budget."
Julia MacDonald, chair of the biosphere group carrying out a preliminary business plan that uses Rathtrevor as template, said the possible environmental ramifications of building in Rathtrevor will be up for discussion.
"It will be an open house with different tables with information set up. People won't all have to come at once."
She said preliminary drawings and representatives from the committee, Ecotrust and BC Parks will be on hand to answer questions.
Rammed earth construction and the potential for environmentally friendly LEED certification are being looked at but MacDonald cautioned there are upfront costs that need to be considered.
"The architect is looking at what kind of building could be situated there,"she said.
